Tax Deadline Extended for TN and Other States

If you live in Tennessee—or certain other states impacted by recent natural disasters, you now have more time to file your federal taxes. The IRS has granted an automatic extension until November 3, 2025 for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas.

Who Qualifies for the Extension?

You don’t have to be a business owner to qualify. The extension applies to all taxpayers, including:

  • Individuals with W-2 income

  • Freelancers and gig workers

  • Small business owners and sole proprietors

  • Nonprofits and corporations

As long as your address (home or business) is located in one of the affected counties, the IRS automatically grants you this extra time. No need to file for an extension.

States with Extended Deadlines

As of now, the following states have received IRS tax relief with extended deadlines:

  • Tennessee: All 95 counties qualify for relief due to severe storms and flooding that began on April 2, 2025. The new deadline is November 3, 2025.

  • Arkansas: The entire state qualifies for relief due to severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that began on April 2, 2025. The new deadline is November 3, 2025.

What’s Covered in the Extension?

This extended deadline applies to:

  • 2024 individual income tax returns

  • Business returns (LLCs, S Corps, etc.)

  • Quarterly estimated payments

  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax filings

  • IRA and HSA contributions

  • Information returns like 1099s or W-2s (if due after the disaster start date)

If your original federal deadline fell within the specified disaster period for your state, it's now automatically extended.

What You Should Do Now

Even though the deadline is extended, it’s smart to act early:

1. Get organized. Start gathering documents, receipts, and income records.
2. Plan your payment. Set aside funds if you expect to owe.
3. Don’t delay your refund. File early if you’re owed money or need your return for financing.
