How to Identify Paint Colors Undertones

Have you ever picked out a paint color that you loved, and when you painted your walls, it looked totally different? The reason? Undertone. The undertone is the base color before white is added to make it light. It is responsible for making a color either warm or cool. Warm paint colors have yellow, brown, orange, and red undertones. Cool paint colors have green, black, purple, or blue undertones. The truth is that paint color mistakes happen quite often, which can be expensive and frustrating, but here 3 tips to identify the undertone in paint colors, so you don’t make this mistake again.

Select the color your love

Start by choosing a color you love and make you feel good. Grab a paint deck and select the paint strip that contains the color you love.

Find the undertone

Look at the bottom of the paint color strip; the undertone is normally the darkest o boldest shade of the strip. This will help you identify the undertones because they’re all in the same family of undertones. Another way is to grab a piece of white paper and put your paint chip on it. The contrast will make the true color stand out.

Compare your color

When looking at the paint deck and you see a paint color you love, always look at the paint strip to the left and to the right. These also can give more information about the undertone or base color. That way, you know if you are in the right direction.
